Leading the Way in Lending Strength
We were very moved by our introduction to The Zebra Child Protection Centre, a place of healing, support and justice for children who have been abused and a resource for non-offending parents or caregivers. We are prepared to do whatever we can to champion the Zebra Centre’s important work in our community. We hope that you will be moved to join us in supporting this vital organization. Together we can assure our community’s children that we know the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. And we say, without hesitation, “We are ready to lend strength to the right side.”
In A True Book: Zebras, author Melissa Stewart says, “When zebras run in a group, their stripes blend together. It may be hard for enemies to tell where one zebra ends and another starts.” That’s how the Zebra Centre works, by bringing a multi-disciplinary community of professionals—Edmonton Police Service, Alberta Children’s Services, Crown Prosecutors, Child at Risk Response Teams, medical and trauma screening professionals and volunteer Child and Family Advocates – to an environment that nurtures the hurt child and uses all the wisdom of its partnership to see that justice is done. Even though the adult zebras are fierce and ever watchful, they indulge in play with their colts and fillies. They seem to instinctively know that children need to be nurtured in ways appropriate to their age. The Zebra Centre knows this too.
As parents of four children, we know deep in our hearts that we will make any and every sacrifice to protect them from danger. Additionally, as Edmontonians, we believe that when even one of our community’s children is threatened at the heart of their lives—within their homes, family and circle of friends—we must join together to guard their welfare. In closing, we have to say that our sporting sides take a little pride that Edmonton is leading the way in this collaborative, professional and caring approach to tackling an insidious social crime. Please join us in showing the brave children who summon the courage to take the first step to right a wrong, that they have the whole community running with them.
